Greenfield steel mill featuring a first-of-its-kind continuous galvanizing + annealing capability.
Lake Erie Electric and its joint venture partner served as the primary electrical contractors on this exciting project. The job involved construction of the building and all support facilities, as well as the installation of the OEM-furnished galvanizing / annealing line equipment. The building alone is a massive 1,600 feet in length. The scope also included the 138kV switch yard and all power distribution; the water treatment facility; an air separation plant for Linde; the crane automation system; and the complete networking infrastructure, including all fiber cabling, server room, and UPS system.
The Customer engaged our team to support the project from end-to-end, beginning with constructability reviews during preconstruction. During construction, Lake Erie Electric’s site team utilized many innovative installation techniques and leveraged its in-house fabrication capabilities, delivering cost and schedule savings to the Customer. At the peak of this project, Lake Erie Electric employed 330 electricians, 32 foremen, 5 general foremen and a staff of twelve engineers and managers.
One challenge the team faced during this project was the removal of the General Contractor mid-project. After this occurred, Lake Erie Electric stepped up and fulfilled the GC role, taking charge of the site safety, site logistics, oversight of multiple sub-contracts, all while managing continued efficiency and reliability during the global pandemic of COVID19.
