In the first quarter of 2015, Lake Erie Electric was awarded the Cleveland Clinic Ring Bus. The project is located on Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus and spans from E. 86th Street to E. 105th Street and Chester Avenue to Cedar Avenue.
The Ring Bus was a Design Assist project and collaborative effort between Whiting-Turner, AECOM, Karpinski Engineering, Osborn Engineering, and Great Lakes Construction. The team members worked closely to ensure safety on the job site, maintain the budget, and deliver quality.
Construction began in April 2015 and includes 16,000 linear feet of duct bank with over 550,000 feet of 5” PVC conduit. The project houses a total of 4 substations (at 90 megawatts each), over 400,000 feet of 15kV cable, 30,000 cubic yards of excavated soil, 16 street crossings, and 19,000 cubic yards of concrete encasement.
The city of Cleveland required a total of 90 permits throughout the construction process. One obstacle the team dealt with and overcame was traffic. Typically, vehicular traffic is a major concern but for this project, the pedestrian traffic was the main issue. Lake Erie Electric worked with the other trades to identify potential hazards for upcoming work. They proceeded to develop, review, and implement a plan of action prioritizing the safety of pedestrians.
